Situated close to the Fayette/Coweta County line is the well-loved Line Creek Nature Area preserved by Peachtree City – complete with a wooden boardwalk, fishing dock, gazebo, and several historically significant sites.ย
Mayor Kim Learnard was proud to have proposed restoring the storm-damaged wooden boardwalk in the Line Creek Nature Area, despite receiving a majority vote against it from the Peachtree City Council on June 15. In light of this, Robert Curnow was tasked with finding the most cost-effective way to reopen the nature attraction to the public. The estimated cost of restoring the boardwalk and removing fallen trees was projected to be around $200,000.
The council, led by Councilman Mike King and joined by members Phil Prebor, Clint Holland, and Frank Destadio, decided to opt for a much shorter boardwalk – cutting back from two-tenths of a mile into the swampy area along Line Creek – to about 1,056 feet and ending in benches โso that people can look at turtles,โ as suggested by Prebor. Despite this decision comprising a loss of more than 90% of the current walkable length of the boardwalk, the Line Creek Nature Area remains the only such extensive boardwalk nature area in Fayette County. It is still featured on the city’s website as a popular destination for visitors, containing several historical sites.
The 70-acre public preserve, located off Highway 54 on the Fayette/Coweta County line, is home to an upland hardwood forest, beautiful creekside granite outcroppings, a rushing stream bordered by native azaleas, a fishing dock, a gazebo and almost three miles of nature trails. In addition, visitors may also take note of several historic sites, including the Mule Rock carving along the Mule Rock Trail.
With the opening of Line Creek Wetland in 2017, the area is even more attractive, with its observation deck and features that demonstrate how water is naturally slowed down and filtered. ADA accessibility is available at the parking area, restroom, and pond. Line Creek Nature Area provides an unforgettable outdoor experience for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The site is proud to welcome canine companions on their journey, but it kindly reminds all visitors that dogs must be kept on a leash while visiting this beautiful site.
Despite the difficult decision of the Peachtree City Council to reduce the previous size of the boardwalk, Line Creek Nature Area is still an exceptional destination within Fayette County. It continues to offer guests stunning natural scenery and unforgettable historical sites such as the Mule Rock carving. This destination should remain the city’s pride for many years, giving visitors a unique view of nature’s wonders and some of its stories.
