Council Commits to Repairing Boardwalk in Flat Creek Nature Area

by | Jun 28, 2023

The City of Peachtree has put forth an effort to repair the Flat Creek Nature Area boardwalk in response to storms that caused trees to crash into the boardwalk. Recently, the City Council addressed their Meeting Agenda item concerning the boardwalk repairs and tree removal, estimated at $200,000 but expertly managed with a final cost of $14,000. The Mayor spoke her full support of the repair and featured public comments and met with favorable opinions from Councilman King and Prebor.

The City of Peachtree is proud to announce that the council is committed to repairing the boardwalk through the Flat Creek Nature Area. Keith Larson alerted The Citizen to the error in an earlier story and provided the correct information. The story had incorrectly mentioned the Line Creek Nature Area, instead of the Flat Creek Nature Area, as the area under discussion by the council. It is clear now that the boardwalk being discussed was in the Flat Creek Nature Area, not the Line Creek Nature Area. The Citizen apologizes for the error and appreciates the quick correction from Keith Larson.

Flat Creek Boardwalk Repair and Tree Removal

The City Council’s Meeting Agenda item 06-23-06 โ€” Flat Creek Boardwalk Repair and Tree Removal was addressed last Thursday, with the City Staff providing an extensive presentation of the proposed repairs to the boardwalk. Despite several winter and spring storms resulting in trees crashing onto the boardwalk and necessitating its closure, the repairs have been completed successfully for $14,000, with the removal of all trees in contact with the boardwalk and within 20 feet costing a critical total of $135,000. Accounting for the contingency fund, the project was estimated at $200,000 but has been expertly managed by the City Engineer to ensure safe public access once again.

The Mayor proudly expressed her full support of the repairs and read out a public comment submitted to the Council, praising the boardwalk as one of the City’s most notable features. Councilman King and Prebor both favored a short boardwalk from the paved path expressing concern for future costs.

Councilman Holland and Destadio proposed that the boardwalk remain extended to at least the scenic Flat Creek to provide a better view of nature. The City Council consensus was to review the project and provide alternative cost estimates for removing the North Boardwalk, ending the South Boardwalk at Flat Creek with an observation platform/turn-around point (approximately 500 feet), and removing any excess South Boardwalk that will not be maintained. Furthermore, the Mayor reminded everyone of the 1992 Peachtree City Comprehensive Plan, which established the objective of developing a nature center and boardwalk trail through the area of Flat Creek wetlands to help educate children on environmental concerns.

In 1995, the Fayette County Water System awarded the Southern Conservation Trust a grant of $50,000 to construct the Flat Creek Nature Preserve Boardwalk. This allowed the Trust to install a 700ft natural surface trail starting at the Fred Brown Amp., 1,136ft of the boardwalk, two viewing platforms, interpretive signs, and materials for visitors. The project was completed successfully in 2022, transforming the area into a beautiful nature preserve that invited visitors to explore and learn about the environment.

The Trust also added a reroute of the existing natural surface trail through the McIntosh Recreation Complex to the South Boardwalk, which will be in effect once the North Boardwalk is removed.
