Lt. Spencer Marion, a native of Peachtree City, Georgia, is proudly upholding the 123-year tradition of service under the sea to help ensure Americans’ safety. Joining the Navy eight years ago, he now serves with Commander Submarine Group 10. His decision to join was inspired by a desire to serve his country while exploring the beauty of living in beach towns. Consequently, Marion has been able to live out his dream and be part of a small but essential group of servicemen who make up only 10 percent of the U.S. Navy’s personnel yet play a critical role in carrying out one of the Defense Department’s most critical missions: strategic deterrence.
Growing up in Peachtree City gave him the skills and values he needs to excel in this demanding and rewarding field. He is proud to be part of a global fleet equipped with the most advanced submarines in the world. The Virginia-class SSN is a state-of-the-art submarine, able to carry out a wide range of missions, including hunting down enemy submarines and surface ships, striking targets ashore with cruise missiles, delivering Navy SEALs, conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, and engaging in mine warfare. This cutting-edge technology allows Combatant Commanders to meet strategic demands in this era of competition.
The Columbia-class SSBN will be the largest, most capable, and most advanced submarine produced by the U.S. — replacing the current Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarines to ensure continuous sea-based strategic deterrence into the 2080s. These impressive vessels are explicitly designed for stealth, extended patrols, and the precise delivery of missiles. He is proud to have such a robust and reliable asset in the Navy’s arsenal.

With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.
Marion has achieved significant accomplishments while serving in the Navy, including qualifying as a conning officer aboard USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier deployed in Japan. This is a remarkable accomplishment and an example of the dedication and hard work that sailors demonstrate daily.
Marion is proud to have joined the exceptional group of heroes and leaders who have served in the Navy. She acknowledges the support of her father, Randy, who served as an Air Force pilot, and her mother, Brenda, for their unwavering encouragement throughout her career.
