Peachtree City Council Votes to Rezone 39 Acres Near Starr’s Mill School Complex

by | Jul 19, 2023

At a contested City Council meeting on July 13, the Peachtree City Council voted to rezone almost 39 acres near the Starrโ€™s Mill school complex, granting A Better Way Ministries the Grand Marshal Trophy at the behest of Mayor Kim Learnard. Despite objections from some citizens, the lot size for 74 proposed homes was reduced to a quarter acre each, allowing for more significant high-end properties with a density of 1.9 units per acre.

Mayor Kim Learnard proudly presented the Grand Marshal Trophy to A Better Way Ministries representatives at the City Council meeting on July 13, commending them for their success in the 4th of July Parade. Despite the disapproval from some residents in attendance, the Peachtree City Council voted 3-to-2 to rezone nearly 39 acres off Redwine Road near Starrโ€™s Mill school complex from R-12 to Limited Use Residential. The lot sizes for the 74 proposed homes remain at a quarter acre each, providing a density of 1.9 units per acre. The property, an active horse farm until its annexation into the city in 2020, now boasts an updated zoning status.

The City of Peachtree is proud of its recent rezoning decision. With more minor building setbacks, larger high-end designs featuring more than 3,000 square feet of living space are now within reach. What’s even more impressive is that these million-dollar homes can be built with as little as 10 feet separating the side walls of one house from a neighboring wall. Such forward-thinking zoning policies allow Peachtree to welcome even more residents into their thriving community, all while maintaining the high-end appeal the city is known for. With this welcoming approach to new development, the future of Peachtree is looking brighter than ever.

The City Council has made some promising decisions recently that show their strong commitment to the safety and well-being of their citizens. Despite initial concerns from residents about runoff water and shrinking backyards, the council voted in favor of rezoning and permitting the construction of McMansions to meet the growing demand for housing. This action will provide more living spaces for families and stimulate economic development. Additionally, the council authorized the purchase of an armored tactical vehicle for $384,850, signaling their dedication to protecting the community against potential threats. We can all rest easy knowing that our council works tirelessly to create a safe and prosperous city for all.

Additionally, the City Council allocated $134,000 to restore and re-coating of City Hall, Fire Station 81, and Fire Station 82, providing a much-needed facelift for these city buildings.

The City of Peachtree’s decision to rezone nearly 39 acres off Redwine Road and authorize purchasing a luxurious tactical vehicle signals the city’s desire for rapid economic growth financially with large, high-end homes and being prepared for any potential threats. While opponents worry about the effects that the development might have on runoff water and smaller backyards, differing opinions on the direction of the city are to be expected. Nevertheless, with decisions like this one, there is no doubt that Peachtree City will continue to become an even more desirable place to call home.
