Rebuilding Peachtree City’s Line Creek Nature Area: A Costly Challenge

by | Jul 12, 2023

Following the devastating 2015 flood which obliterated parts of Peachtree City’s Line Creek Nature Area, Mayor Kim Learnard have proposed restoring the boardwalk in the natural attraction. However, after much debate and evaluation, the City Council revealed an alternative plan that proved more cost-efficient, allowing visitors to experience the Nature Area while minimizing the length of the boardwalk.

Mayor Kim Learnard proposed to the Peachtree City Council on June 15 to restore the storm-damaged boardwalk in Line Creek Nature Area. However, the majority voted against it. Despite this outcome, Learnard remained passionate about removing the leaning and downed trees and replacing the parts of the walkway that they had damaged. Following the Council’s direction, City Manager Robert Curnow was assigned to find the most cost-effective way to reopen the nature attraction for public use. Estimates suggest repairing the wooden walkway and removing the trees would cost approximately $200,000.

Therefore, the Council proposed an alternative plan that Councilman Mike King, joined by members Phil Prebor, Clint Holland, and Frank Destadio, found more cost-efficient. The group suggested a much shorter boardwalk of 1,056 feet ending with benches, significantly reducing the walkable length from two-tenths of a mile to 70 feet. It also allowed visitors to enjoy the nature area and its historical sites.

The Line Creek Nature Area is a 70-acre public preserve along the Fayette/Coweta County line. It offers a unique mix of habitats, including an upland hardwood forest, creekside granite outcroppings, and a rushing stream bordered by native azaleas. Visitors can also enjoy a fishing dock on a small pond, a gazebo, almost three miles of nature trails, and various historical sites. Among them is the Mule Rock trail with its impressive Mule Rock carving. The stretch of Line Creek was home to multiple mills in the 1800s, and the remnants of their dams can still be seen today. Recently, the Council proposed an alternative plan that proved more cost-efficient, allowing visitors to experience the Nature Area while minimizing the length of the boardwalk.

Trinity Development also completed the new Line Creek Wetland with a stunning observation deck, showcasing how water is naturally slowed down and filtered. An extensive range of amenities, including picnic tables, small bridges, a rock theater, and multiple information kiosks, are available for visitors. Plus, ADA-accessible parking areas, restrooms, and ponds have been provided for everyone’s convenience. All these features make Line Creek Nature Area an unmissable destination in Peachtree City, GA, 30269.

Just to remind you, all dogs should be leashed while exploring the area.

The Council’s alternative plan for restoring the Line Creek Nature Area provided a more cost-effective solution to the boardwalk damage, allowing visitors to have still access to experience the area’s many features, such as hardwood forests, streams, a pond, a gazebo, nature trails, and historic sites. By making these changes, the City Manager was assigned to find the most economical way to improve this nature attraction while minimizing the walkable distance. This decision allows the area to open to the public with improved safety regulations and further enjoyment of its natural and historical assets.
